Description

Each student who is registered for the MRes in Urban Sustainability and Resilience is required to carry out an individual research project as part of their programme of study on a topic of their choosing related to urban sustainability and/or resilience. There are many different kinds of project that can be undertaken by students on the MRes. Some of them will involve field work. Others will involve laboratory experiments or other forms of data collection such as interviews, questionnaire surveys, or observations. Some may involve developing a theoretical framework. Some may be a state-of-the-art review. If you intend to continue on to study for an EngD or PhD the MRes project may be designed to inform the direction and/or scope of your doctoral research as well as providing some reportable results. Students are encouraged to submit their research report in the form of an article ready for publication.

Learning Outcomes

  • A deep understanding of a chosen subject area relevant to urban sustainability and/or urban resilience at a higher level
  • Demonstrable ability to think originally and critically about problems in your subject area, to synthesize ideas from current literature, and identify a gap in knowledge for further research
  • Ability to design and conduct a small piece of research effectively, applying a systematic approach to the research and reflect on the limitations of the work
  • Ability to communicate your research in a concise and organized manner
