Description

‘Musculoskeletal tissue biology – disease and dysfunction’ will provide you with knowledge and understanding of disease and injury of musculoskeletal tissues and therapeutic interventions at the molecular and cell level. This module follows on from ‘Musculoskeletal tissue biology – form and function’ where you will have learnt about the molecular composition and ultra-structure of healthy musculoskeletal tissues. You will cover common musculoskeletal diseases such as osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, intervertebral disc disease, tendinopathies and osteoporosis. You will learn about bone fracture and tendon injuries and the repair of these injuries. The physiology of pain and chronic pain will be introduced and you will also learn about nerve repair and regeneration. The mechanism of degeneration and disease in musculoskeletal tissues will be discussed and related to therapeutic targets and strategies. You will be introduced to the most recent developments in regenerative medicine such as stem cell therapies and bioengineered materials for treating musculoskeletal injuries and disease.
