Description

Aims:

  1. Give students an understanding of processes that nature utilises in the production of functional materials;
  2. Provide students with a systematic introduction on the structure-property relationship of natural materials;
  3. Illustrate and let the students practice the application of nature-inspired methodologies for materials design and manufacturing.

Synopsis:

Nature-Inspired Materials Engineering illustrates natural methods of manufacture. The module provides a systematic introduction on the structure-property relationship of natural materials. It also introduces examples of processes that nature utilises in the production of functional materials. This module teaches you how to apply mechanisms found in nature and fundamental engineering principles, learned from nature, to design and manufacture functional materials.

Learning Outcomes:

On successful completion of the module, you will be able to:

  1. Identify the unique properties and the structure-property relationship of materials from nature;
  2. Describe the processes of how nature fabricates materials;
  3. Understand essential concepts in materials science at multiple scales, from molecules to manufacturing and apply those concepts in materials design and processes.
