Description

The module will introduce students to the achievements of neuroscientists using imaging technologies in the study of language processing. Students, having attended the module of Introduction to the Brain and Imaging the Brain, will already know the advantages and limitations of ERP, TMS, structural and functional MRI and MEG, and their specific experimental design requirements. In this module you will learn how these methods are being applied to study how the brain processes language.

There are 10 weekly ~2hr in-person sessions consisting of 8 in-person interactive lectures, a student presentation session and an essay preparation session

Indicative Topics

  • Introduction to the neuroscience of language

Theories and neurobiological basis of:

  • Conceptual process and lexical access
  • Reading
  • Syntactic processing

Module Aims

  • Understand the theoretical debates and questions addressed by neurobiology of language research
  • Knowledge of state of the art research methods and their applications
  • Understand the possibilities and limitations of using imaging technology in studying language processing both in normal and patient populations
  • Develop confidence in reading and critiqueing research papers. Students will be asked to read an original paper for each session to discuss it in class.
