Description

This module provides students with an overview of different manifestations of hate crime and extremism online. Students will learn about trends and common expressions of online hate speech and harassment as well as how extremist and terrorist actors use the internet to share propaganda, recruit supporters, and organise attacks. The module also discusses mis- and disinformation, including the more nascent concept of deep fakes. Students will reflect on the overlap between the problem spaces of crime, terrorism, and extremism, hate speech, and disinformation. Throughout the module, students will further explore the reciprocal relationship between online and offline hate crime and extremism. In addition to examining the conceptual and theoretical undermining of the phenomena, their prevalence, and risk factors of victimisation, students get to know measures to detect and counter online hate crime and extremism. Doing so, they will evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of human- as well as technology-centred approaches. Finally, students also become familiar with research methods that are best suited to study manifestations of hate crime and extremism online.
