Description

In this module you will be given an applied overview of the field of patient safety. You will be introduced to a range of literature, and will examine the stages of identifying risks, understanding causes, identifying solutions, evaluating the impact and translating evidence into safer care. We will study methodologies used in patient safety, such as tasks analysis, failure modes and effects and root cause analysis. You will learn to critically appraise research that has applied the models and techniques studied in a healthcare setting, and will debate the merits and downsides of different approaches. We will discuss issues around the adoption of new technologies and the development of information systems for supporting risk management and ensuring patient safety.

At the end of this module you will be able to:

  1. Understand the terminology used within patient safety.
  2. Examine critically the principles of risk management and patient safety.
  3. Examine critically key methodologies used to identify, analyse and manage risks.
  4. Apply patient safety methodologies within a healthcare environment.
  5. Review evidence on factors leading to mistakes or other threats to patient safety.
  6. Apply patient safety concepts to the field of health informatics.

The module is delivered through web-based distance learning in the ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº Virtual Learning Environment plus a 3-day face-to-face teaching session.
