Description

Module Content

This module introduces the concept of phonemic transcription and discusses the features of connected speech in English.

Teaching Delivery

Teaching is delivered via a weekly two-hour lecture in addition to a one-hour tutorial.

Indcative Topics

Indicative lecture topics are based on module content in 2023/24, subject to possible changes.

Feature representations of segments are introduced and the concept of formal phonological rules and underlying representations are discussed. An introduction to acoustics and speech perception.

Module Aims and/or Objectives

The primary learning objectives are:

ÌýÌýÌý To enable students to develop skills in phonemic transcription of English, which will be used in later modules in English phonology.
ÌýÌýÌý To introduce phonological concepts.
ÌýÌýÌý To relate phonetic concepts to physical descriptions of speech.
