Description

The pilot plant unit operations course is a module designed to provide hands-on training in the piloting of a bioprocess, embracing fermentation, recovery and purification operations. The module will incorporate workshops and practical sessions covering knowledge of the unit operation observed. It will teach techniques in bioprocess prediction, evaluation of performance, real-time monitoring and mass balancing. Delegates will use knowledge gained during the week, to work in groups, to design a hypothetical pilot plant week activity, and individually to become trained on a selected piece of pilot plant equipment.Ìý

Upon completion of the course, a student should be able to:Ìý

  • Discuss the practical challenges in running and monitoring the following unit operations at pilot scale:Ìý fermentation, centrifugation, homogenisation, filtration & chromatography and how these differ from bench scale operations.Ìý

  • Design a hypothetical pilot plant week activity demonstrating the application of one or more unit operations.ÌýÌý

  • Demonstrate independent operation of a piece of pilot plant equipment with confidence & competence in a trained operator assessment
