Description

This module covers a wider spectrum of topics pertaining to police and relations with the public. In recent years, public confidence in the police has increasingly come to be a benchmark indicator of police performance. Improving relations with the public has become the cornerstone of modern policing in many countries. Specific topics such as: policing diverse communities, gender and policing, public order policing, policing riots, stop and search tactics, and counter terrorism strategies will be discussed in the context of increasing public satisfaction and public confidence in the police. The lectures and seminars will be focused on identifying issues that could potentially alienate the public and discussing appropriate strategies to mitigate emerging conflicts between the police and the public in specific situations. The experience of various police organizations applying these strategies from diverse contexts and countries will be discussed. The module is conceived on the principle that police services to the public can be conceived of being of three types: Universal services (Maintenance of law and order). Targeted Services (Crime prevention (specific)). Specialised services (Particularly sections of society). As a result the specific session titles reflect these three kinds of services that provide opportunities for police-public contact.
