This module is open to any postgraduate student except those on MA Ethnographic and Documentary Film and MFA Creative Documentary. Anthropology students are prioritised. Please note this module is capped.

Description

Module Content

Led by a professional film maker, the module will provide you with the technical and production skills needed to complete a 5-10' minute documentary film using the cameras, Macs and facilities in the department's future media studio.

Ìý

During the course you will learn how to make documentary f ilms by developing and researching your ideas and being taught how to direct and edit your f ilms. Weekly practical camera and editing exercises will be set to build up your production skills. A range of short f ilms will be screened and discussed throughout the course.

Students undertaking the course have access to the ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº Anthropology Audio Visual Lab with Premiere CC and Adobe Creative Suite enabled machines as well as professional camera kits for the duration of the course.Ìý

Learning Outcomes

Having completed the course students will:Ìý

  • Have made their own short documentary film, produced to a high production standard, including the use of digital video cameras and sound recording equipment and editing software.Ìý
  • Have developed analytical and critical skills in considering how film can be used to ‘capture’ and reveal the world to others.Ìý
  • Have been exposed to and challenged to reflect on the multiplicity of forms generically known as ‘documentary film’.Ìý
  • Have learned how to undertake effective research practices and to think conceptually and practically about documentary ideas.Ìý

Indicative Delivery Method

One 7 hour seminar per week made up of practical lectures on documentary production skills and practical exercises which are reviewed in class time.

  • This module is available to external candidates for £1700.
  • Please note participants are also required to bring two external hard-drives on the module.
