Description
In this module (given you already have a basic understanding of dementia) you will gain advanced skills and proficiency in the practical aspects of dementia neuroscience. The emphasis is on developing expertise in assessing patients with cognitive symptoms in general and on the diagnosis of key specific cognitive syndromes. In addition, you will gain insights into important practical issues that arise in the management of patients with dementia including therapeutic options, ethical and legal aspects. The syllabus covers topics of special relevance to people living with dementia and their care givers. Sessions will be led by senior cognitive neurologists, psychiatrists, neuropsychologists and other clinical professionals (e.g. speech and language therapist; nurse specialist). The module takes an interactive, active learning approach, using a combination of videos and tutorial workshops.
The module learning objectives are:
- To develop advanced and practical skills in the diagnosis and management of dementia.
- To demonstrate confidence in the assessment and diagnosis of the patient with cognitive complaints.
- To explain important legal, ethical and social issues of patients with dementia, and translate them intro practical application in a clinical setting.
- To appraise evidence-based treatments in dementia and apply practical insights into potential drug treatments.
