Description

This module is designed to give students a solid understanding of the crime prevention process. In order to demonstrate such an understanding, students should avoid simply considering a crime type and suggesting a list of possible responses. Instead, they are expected to demonstrate a clear grasp of the actual process of crime prevention, its theory and application. For example, students should consider appropriate frameworks that can inform the design of preventative interventions and highlight issues that may arise in implementing these interventions. It is also useful to consider issues such as the quality of evidence that is available in making decisions regarding prevention. There will be discussion of the strengths and weaknesses of different evaluation designs and further evaluative techniques that are commonly used in evidence production. Finally it is useful to understand the process of synthesising evidence about 'what works' in reducing a particular type of crime so that it is possible to give practitioners a detailed account of what they might expect when using a particular preventative strategy. This course focuses exclusively on examples of crime reduction using situational crime prevention techniques.
