Description

This module is all about Inflammation which is the body’s defence reaction in response to tissue damage or injury. Inflammation is normally protective against pathogen infection, controlled and self-limiting. However it can become dysregulated and part of the disease process.

In this module you will learn about:

  • the molecular and cellular mechanisms that result in inflammatory reactions in normal tissues
  • the types of inflammation in health and disease
  • the role of various immune responses in this process
  • the key cell types involved in human inflammation and how they bring about the inflammatory response
  • the cellular, molecular and biochemical mediators required during the inflammatory response in most of the human tissues throughout the body
  • the various complex cellular and molecular mechanisms taking place during the inflammatory response after injury or pathogen insult
  • human diseases in which there is an inflammatory component

Lecture topics:

  1. Introduction to inflammation and inflammatory processes
  2. Acute vs Chronic Inflammation
  3. Cell types involved in inflammation
  4. Impact of T cells and B cells on inflammation
  5. Inflammatory mediators
  6. Inflammatory signalling
  7. Resolution of inflammation
  8. Inflammation and aging
  9. Normal inflammatory response in wound healing
  10. Inflammation and autoimmunity
  11. The inflammasome
  12. Introduction to inflammatory diseases
