Description

Principles of Respiratory Biology will give you a detailed introduction to the fundamentals of the anatomy, cell biology and physiology of the respiratory system. It will cover in detail the structure, cell biology and function of the respiratory system including ventilation, blood gas transport, acid-base balance, diffusion, pulmonary blood flow, pulmonary gas exchange, mechanics of breathing, control of ventilation, defence systems of the lung in particular and respiration as a whole under stress and at the limit.

This module will provide you with a critical understanding of the structural characteristics, the cell biology and physiology of the respiratory system. It will give you competence in gaining critical thinking skills and being able to evaluate data presented in a scientific paper.

After taking this module you should be able to describe the anatomical structures of the respiratory system. You should understand the principles of the respiratory biology including the different complex cellular and molecular mechanisms taking place during breathing and be able to examine the most current research publications in the field.

The module comprises a combination of flip-lectures, lectures, tutorials and independent reading. As well as lectures you will write an essay on a scientifically contentious topic, based on your analysis of research papers.

The module is compulsory for students on the Respiratory Clinical Science MSc degree.
