Description

MODULE OUTLINE

This module further develops a range of transferable professional and clinical skills, knowledge, values and attitudes relevant to speech and language therapy practice and promotes the integration of theory and practice, with particular reference to working with adults. Learning takes place both in college-based workshops and tutorials and on clinical placements. SLAN0008: Professional Studies 2 builds on skills developed during Year A of the course, particularly in SLAN0003: Professional Studies 1. It also links very closely to all modules in year B, particularly SLAN0009: Management of Communication Disorders 3: Language and Cognition (Acquired), SLAN0010: Management of Communication Disorders 4: Speech Swallowing and Voice and SLAN0011: Brain Mind and Health because it supports the integration of theory to practice. This module is relevant to many of the Health and Care Professions Council’s ‘Standards of Proficiency’ for speech and language therapists.

AIMS

  • To continue to develop transferable professional and clinical knowledge, skills, values and attitudes required to meet the HCPC Standards of Proficiency for speech and language therapists.
  • To integrate the knowledge and skills developed in the other modules of the course within practice settings.
  • To continue to develop knowledge and understanding of the speech and language therapy profession and service and its relationship with other professions and services.
  • To continue to develop knowledge of ethical guidelines, professional codes of practice and the law relating to clinical practice.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

At the end of this module the students will be able to do the following within the role of the speech and language therapist with adults:

Knowledge and understanding

  • evaluate and apply relevant professional guidelines, codes of conduct, national policies and the law;
  • describe how SLT services are commissioned, delivered and evaluated, within the context of health and social care services in the UK;
  • explain the purpose and processes of information governance, audit and quality management;
  • describe recruitment, supervision and appraisal processes relevant to the work of a newly qualified practitioner.

Skills

  • meet all relevant professional competencies as expected of a newly qualified practitioner;
  • devise and apply strategies to evaluate and adapt own practice and the practice of others in order to maximise professional effectiveness;
  • adjust practice effectively to take account of social, linguistic, cultural and environmental factors;
  • demonstrate highly professional working relationships with clients, carers, colleagues and peers, based on mutual respect, empowerment and partnership;
  • apply appropriate, safe and effective clinical decision making to assessment, intervention, management and discharge;
  • demonstrate effective skills in professional leadership and caseload management as appropriate for a newly qualified practitioner;
  • impart and share knowledge effectively in a range of contexts.

These outcomes will be achieved through:

  • integration of theory with practice in clinical tutorials, workshops and clinical placements
  • making links across modules
  • professional engagement in clinical tutorials, workshops, pre-clinical and clinical placements
  • guidance and formative feedback from tutors, peers and practice educators on all aspects of performance
  • students’ commitment to their continuing professional development by maintaining a reflective record of their knowledge and skills in a PDP and using this to develop their professional practice
  • guided reading, use of web-based resources and independent study to consolidate and supplement learning and to broaden knowledge and understanding of professional practice
