Description

Module Content

An introduction to real-time language processing. This module will explore how humans represent, comprehend, and produce language. We will examine core properties of mental representations and processes involved in understanding language, and how linguistic processes unfold in real time.

This module provides an introduction to the study of real-time language processing, with topics ranging from speech perception, word recognition to sentence and discourse comprehension. We will discuss classic findings as well as current research in the field. Students will also learn the basics of experimental design and core experimental techniques.

Teaching Delivery

This module is taught in 10 weekly lectures and 10 weekly PGTA-led seminars.

Module Aims and/or Objectives

The main module objectives are:
- To introduce the field of experimental psychology as it applies to language processing
- To discuss key discoveries in the field and compare the major theoretical frameworks
- To introduce students to experimental design and methodologies
- To develop the ability to read and critically evaluate primary literature in Psycholinguistics
