Description

In this module, students will be introduced to a series of commonly used public health frameworks and learn how to apply learning from the MSc to real-world problems. The module will encourage the students to develop skills in group work, advocacy, and presentation. In combination with other modules, and self-directed study the module will support preparation for the Faculty of Public Health Diplomate Examination (DFPH).

This module will be taught with a combination of 1-2 hours of lecture and 2 hours of practical group work each day. The lectures will build on the tools and skills that students have been introduced to earlier the MSc (鈥渒nows how鈥) and show them how they can be implemented in a real-world environment (鈥渟hows how鈥), including the nuances and challenges that they may face during deployment.

The module will conclude with a capstone lecture from a senior practising public health specialist who will provide their experience and insights relating to the challenges of implementing public health actions, complementing the learning and understanding students have gained throughout the module.

One lecture in the module is dedicated to providing guidance to students on how to prepare for and approach the question styles given in the Diploma of the Faculty of Public Health (DFPH) examinations. Further sources of reading will be highlighted to support the additional self-directed learning needed to cover the DFPH syllabus.

By the end of the module, students will be expected to understand the fundamentals of a range of public health tools, including how they can practically apply them and overcome or mitigate common challenges inherent to each.

Intended learning outcomes of the module:

  • To understand key elements of commonly used public health tools in practice as outlined below.
  • Understand how to use and apply public health intelligence to survey and assess a population鈥檚 health and wellbeing.
  • Understand how to assess evidence of the effectiveness of interventions, programmes and services intended to improve health or wellbeing of individuals or populations and apply this understanding to public health problems.
  • Understand the process of policy and strategy development and implementation.
  • Understand key principles of strategic leadership and collaborative working for health.
  • Understand organisations and organisational change and apply this understanding to planning public health intervention scenarios.
  • Understand frameworks for health promotion, determinants of health and health communication and how these are used in public health practice.
  • Understand key principles of health protection practice.
  • Understand the role of public health in planning health care provision.

The key theme running through the module is that of tailoring your outputs so that it is relevant to what you are trying to achieve so that you are delivering the right message, in the right format, to the right audience.

This theme will be integrated throughout all the lectures and is a really important component of the assessments.
