Description

This module will give you an opportunity to develop knowledge about qualitative, mixed-methods, and participatory research approaches.ÌýQualitative researchÌýinvolves collecting, analysing and interpreting non-numerical data such as audio, video, text and visual images.ÌýÌýMixed-methods researchÌýis the collecting, analysing, interpreting and synthesising of both qualitative and quantitative data in a study. Mixed methods research is increasingly used within public health research and evaluation and in connection with randomised controlled trials. Mixed methods are particularly useful when examining complex social phenomena such as attitudes, experiences and behaviour.ÌýParticipatory researchÌýapproaches are those in which knowledge is produced by affected communities in partnership with researchers.Ìý

The overall aim is to equip you with the knowledge and skills to design and critically appraise qualitative, mixed methods and participatory research projects. There will be a particular focus on the role of these approaches in understanding the complexity of people’s lives,Ìýand addressing power imbalance and injustice.

This highly interactive module will draw upon a number ofÌýdisciplines, bringingÌýin material from outside academia including blogs, podcasts, videos and reports, and will encourage you to reflect upon your own social position as a researcher. You will learn the principles of how to collect and analyse data (includingÌýdesigning topic guides,Ìýinterviewing, facilitatingÌýa focusÌýgroup, qualitative data analysis and data integration).

The assignment is to design and write your own research protocol,Ìýwith a formative presentation to give you feedback and guidance.Ìý
