Description

Quantitative and Qualitative Research Methods 2’ introduces several advanced quantitative and qualitative research methods, with lectures on epidemiology, systematic reviews and meta-analyses, qualitative approaches, multi-level modelling, randomised controlled trials and novel research designs.

By the end of this module, you should able to:

  • Compare different study designs that can be used to collect quantitative data with a focus on trials, observational studies and big data.
  • Critically discuss the use of frequentist statistics and the advantages of other approaches including Bayesian analysis.
  • Compare and contrast epistemologically different approaches to qualitative analysis of textual data.

Describe and illustrate the scientific principles and methods involved in systematic reviewing and meta-analyses and apply these as appropriate in a systematic review of at least 3 empirical papers.

This module is compulsory for all students enrolled on the MSc Health Psychology. Spaces are limited to 60.

The ‘qualitative’ component of this module incorporates lecture-and-workshop sessions on three methods, chosen to cover the two main epistemological approaches to qualitative analysis (realist vs contructivist). The ‘quantitative’ component is lecture-based. You will also attend a Qualitative Analysis Workshop as part of this module.
