Description

The primary objective of this module is to equip you with a set of practical research skills to be able to perform self-directed research in linguistics, from identifying sources of evidence and designing experiments, to evaluating empirical results, engaging critically and integrating results with existing literature. In order to demonstrate these research skills you are expected to be able to produce pieces of academic writing throughout the module.

Research Methodology additionally teaches the writing process, from structuring pieces of writing appropriately to citation of references and effective literature reviews. You are expected to gain a basic understanding of scientific argument, including developing an ability to identify meaningful baselines and testable hypotheses, visualise data with confidence intervals, and to be able to summarise these results in written prose. You should also be able to display an ability to critically engage with your own research, e.g. to identify possible alternative hypotheses for their results and consider potential methods for eliminating these explanations, to address inconclusive research results, etc.
