Description

This module aims to prepare students for the professional world post-graduation by giving the opportunity to experience ‘real-world’ research. It aims for students to engage with a specific research question and develop suitable hypotheses and methodology. Furthermore, it aims for students to collect and analyse data and produce a significant written document.

Our overall aim is to give students the skills & knowledge they require to do high quality research in their area of interest, by allowing them to work alongside active and excellent researchers. The precise research topic and methodology project will be worked out by the student during discussions with the supervisor.

The project will be expected to answer a research question or test a hypothesis relevant to obesity research and the student will be expected to write this up as project dissertation. The dissertation should:

- Examine a tightly focused question or hypothesis relating to a topic of significance.

- Address a knowledgeable reader with a view to enhancing their understanding of the topic.

- Argue from a position whilst critically assessing the issues and literature bearing on the question or hypothesis.

Students should produce a report which is equivalent in structure and tone to a scientific journal article. The research project is an opportunity for the students to develop their research skills and comes as a natural final step of their MSc degree. The dissertation has an appropriate structure for the type of research problem, and the type of methods used.
