Description

Aims:

To provide students with the skills necessary to carry out independent research and to communicate their findings effectively and successfully.

Synopsis:

This module will provide students with an introduction to research, giving an insight into the underlying principles upon which scientific research is based. It will then go on to describe the tools and methods used to carry out and disseminate quantitative research.

SYLLABUS

  • Research ethics
  • What is research and how can we undertake it?
  • Project management
  • Interacting with ‘the Literature’
  • Qualitative data for engineering
  • Asking/answering questions and constructing convincing arguments – Debate and interviewskills
  • Written presentation skills
  • Oral and visual presentation skills
  • Safety and Sustainability

Learning outcomes:

Upon completion of this module, the students will be able to:

  1. Comprehensively describe the quantitative and qualitative research methods available,especially their strengths and limitations both technically and ethically;
  2. Critically evaluate the design of experimental programmes, project managementandanalytical techniques, choosing the most efficient and suitable option in a given situationconsidering safety and sustainability;
  3. Demonstrate a detailed knowledge of the treatment of numerical data and statistics;
  4. Connect to current research topics through state-of-the-art storage, processing andpresentation of very large, complex datasets.
