Description

Module Content

This course offers an introduction to the topics and methods of formal semantics and pragmatics.

Teaching Delivery

This module is taught by 1 x 2 hr lecture and 1 x 2 hr workshop per week.

Indicative Topics

Indicative lecture topics are based on module content in 2023/24, subject to possible changes.

A selection from the following topics will be covered:

Word meaning and the nature of concepts

Vagueness and context dependency

Linguistics variation in lexical semantics

Compositionality

Application of set theory and logical tools in semantics

Semantics/pragmatics distinction

Kinds of context-sensitivity and pragmatic processes

Types of conversational implicature

Pragmatic inference and theory of mind

Module Aims and/or Objectives

The intended learning outcomes are:

Understanding of the concepts and issues outlined in the aims of the module given above

Ability to form and and evaluate hypotheses in semantics and pragmatics
