Description

This advanced module in surface ship structural design covers loading, structural synthesis techniques at hull girder and grillage levels, stress analysis and failure modes.

The aim of the module is to give students an advanced theoretical grounding in one of the fundamental analytical discipline fields of Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering.

Topics covered:

鈥 Structural loading on ships

鈥 Ship structural design synthesis

鈥 Grillage design

鈥 Practical application of structure design

Aims of the module

Students will have an understanding of the key loads acting on a ship and common approaches to ship structural design. They will be able to calculate gross structural responses to loads in terms of average panel stresses and use that knowledge to develop a structural material distribution around the hull, before developing individual grillage panel designs in details and assessing them against failure in various yielding and buckling mechanisms. They will have an appreciation of some of the practical considerations of implementing these structural designs in a ship or marine structure.

Intended learning outcomes

At the end of the module students will be able to:

鈥 Identify key structural elements in surface ships and floating marine platforms (AHEP M1)

鈥 understand key loads acting on a ship and common approaches to ship structural design (AHEP M1)

鈥 Conduct structural analysis at whole ship down to panel level including grillage structures, determining failure levels in yield and buckling (AHEP M3)

鈥 Identify practical considerations of structural designs in a ship or floating platform and associated design issues (AHEP M2, M17)

Higher level learning outcomes (AHEP M1, M2, M3, M4, M17) as defined in the Engineering Council鈥檚 鈥淎ccreditation of Higher Education Programmes鈥 4th Edition ( AHEP 4) published 2020.
