Description

This advanced module covers an introduction into the design and operation of subsea vehicles along with detailed tuition in the design of subsea structures.

The aim of the module is to give students an advanced theoretical grounding in one of the fundamental analytical discipline fields of Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering.

Topics covered:

鈥 Submarine design processes

鈥 Subsea operational environments

鈥 Introduction to submarine hydromechanics

鈥 Subsea structures

Aims of the module

The module is divided into two parts; submarine operations and subsea structures.

After completing the first part, students will have an understanding of the subsea operational environment and the resulting considerations for the submarine designer, including hydrostatics, acoustics and the challenges of energy storage.

After completing the second part, students will be able to design a weight-minimised pressure hull to avoid failure by interframe or overall collapse when subjected to external hydrostatic pressure, appreciating the hull鈥檚 practical limitations on construction.

Intended learning outcomes

At the end of the module students will be able to:

鈥 Identify and understand key elements of the subsea operational environment and how they impact on the design of submarine vehicles (AHEP M1)

鈥 Understand the failure modes associated with submarine pressure hull design and associated mitigation measures (AHEP M1)

鈥 Identify practical considerations in the design of submarine structures in terms of production and maintenance (AHEP M2, M17)

鈥 Design and analyse a weight optimized submarine pressure hull against operational requirements (AHEP M3)

Higher level learning outcomes (AHEP M1, M2, M3, M4, M17) as defined in the Engineering Council鈥檚 鈥淎ccreditation of Higher Education Programmes鈥 4th Edition ( AHEP 4) published 2020.
