Description

The aim is for students to understand the complexities of developing and implementing policies, projects and initiatives for urban sustainability and resilience with the key goal of addressing and tackling climate change. To do so, students will be expected to identify and assess different methods, strategies and policy instruments that can be deployed at various scales (from community, neighbourhood to city levels).

Ìý

We will look at sustainability, resilience and climate change in a systemic and interdisciplinary way, starting by understanding the conceptual and theoretical underpinnings behind each of those three terms and then zooming in towards specific angle of analysis, accounting for various areas of intervention, scales of actions, and various contexts (focus will be mainly on the UK, however European and international examples will also be mobilised). The following topics will be discussed:

  • Planning policy and land uses;
  • Economics of climate change and sustainability;
  • Health including air quality and air pollution;
  • Water and flood management;
  • Housing and communities;
  • Post-Pandemic Cities.

Ìý

On completion of the module, students should be able to:

  • Work creatively, effectively and collaboratively in groups.
  • Understand the challenges faced by delivering urban sustainability and resilience through the lens of climate change.
  • Research the diverse nature of climate change mitigation with the view of promoting sustainable and resilient built environments.
  • Understand and evaluate the effectiveness of methods, strategies/initiatives and policy instruments implemented as to tackle climate change.
  • Present the results of their group research effectively through a variety of media and show an ability to target a 'policy audience'.
