Criteria: Students interested in applying for the course will need near native-speaker competence in English language with a minimum of 7.5 in IELTS or equivalence to a high CEFR C1 level of competence. Students will need to have completed the MA TESOL Pre-service modules EDPS0161: The English Language Learner and EDPS0162: Teaching English: Theories and Approaches. Selection: Students will need to complete a separate application for the course in order to be selected. This will include an application form, a pre-interview and written task, and an in-person interview. The application form and interview will include tasks on language analysis, experiences of learning and practical ideas for teaching. This process is to ensure that those selected for the course are suitable for the specific demands it places on candidates. These demands include a confidence in public speaking and teaching English to large groups of adult students while being observed by peers and a tutor, receiving constructive criticism and providing criticism of others, working as part of a team, an increased and demanding workload, and working to short deadlines.

Description

This pre-service teacher training module allows you to explore the practical, classroom-based implications of approaches and methodologies for English language teaching (ELT) and develop the practical skills you need to plan and teach English as a Second or Other Language. You will participate in a 3-hour lecture/workshop per week as well as a 3-hour teaching practice session in which you will teach groups of learners or observe your colleagues teaching, and receive feedback on your teaching practices.

Course Aims and objectives:

  • To investigate and critically evaluate English language teaching (ELT) methodologies (both historical and current).
  • To apply and adapt ELT methodologies in an international context with reference to individual and cultural leaning preferences and motivations.
  • To research and evaluate theories of language acquisition and learning underpinning ELT methodologies.
  • To research and evaluate approaches and methods for describing language in the areas of grammar, lexis, phonology and discourse, as well as the skills of reading, writing, speaking and listening, and investigate the impact of these on ELT.
  • To acquire skills and practices needed to plan and teach English language to speakers of other languages.

The course focuses on the following practical areas of ELT:

  • English language: the transfer of teacher’s knowledge of language to the classroom.
  • Focus on learners: learning strategies, the motivation/needs of the learner, and responding to learner output.
  • Lesson planning: elements of a lesson plan; lesson progression and staging; timing activities.
  • Classroom techniques: helping teachers and learners to develop language and language skills.
  • Classroom management: creating classroom spaces and interactions appropriate for language learning.
  • Teaching resources: selecting and using classroom-based resources; evaluating and exploiting published materials, and designing materials for use in the classroom.

On completion of the course, in addition to the module credit as part of your MA TESOL degree programme, you will receive a teaching certificate from the Centre for Languages & International Education (CLIE).
