Description

Summary

This module will cover the normal development and physiology of the heart, and the aetiology, epidemiology, pathophysiology and presentation of selected congenital and axquired heart diseases and disorders. You will critically evaluate relevant medical investigations, interventions and outcome measures, in light of the current evidence and service provision. Discussion and debate on the contemporary approaches to prevention and treatment of heart disease will be central to the course. You will also be encouraged to reflect critically on your own practice and scope of practice and actively participate in discussions, debate and workshops.

Learning Objectives and Outcomes

After taking this module, you should be able to:

  1. Understand and have advanced knowledge of the epidemiology, aetiology and pathophysiology of selected heart diseases, both congenital and acquired
  2. Understand and evaluate the investigations, interventions and outcome measures used in assessment, diagnosis and management of heart related disorders and diseases within an evidence-based, clinical reasoning framework
  3. Demonstrate advanced clinical reasoning skills in the assessment and management of congenital and acquired heart disorders in the context of the evolving evidence base and contemporary professional and ethical framework
  4. Critically reflect on their scope of practice and their role within the multi-disciplinary team in the treatment and management of patients with heart disorders and disease

Who is this module for?

You will need to be a qualified physiotherapist, with a degree in physiotherapy at least equivalent to a lower second class Bachelor’s degree.

The module can be chosen as a core component of the Postgraduate Paediatric Physiotherapy pathways at ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº. You may also undertake the course as a discrete unit for CPD or, if assessed, you may use the 15 credits towards completion of the MSc or Diploma at ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº.

Teaching and Learning Methods

The module will be delivered via a combination of face-to-face lectures, workshops and seminars. Teaching will be facilitated by relevant experts in their field. There are three days of face-to-face teaching and three days of online learning.

Moodle, the ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº virtual learning platform will be used to facilitate communication both between tutors and students, and between the students themselves, and also to provide learning resources and feedback. Lecture capture technology will be used throughout the module for recording of lectures, so that you can refer back to them during revision periods.
