Description

This module brings together the notions of entertainment and information at the heart of the ‘idea of documentary’. In the post-millennial age old dualisms such as ‘documentary’ and ‘drama’ are, if not becoming merged, then permitted to exist in dialogue with each other. This module is intended to analyse and discuss the entertain/inform dichotomy and to contribute to the academic discourse on fact-based film and media begun with John Grierson’s founding definition of documentary as ‘the creative treatment of actuality’. This module will immerse students in documentaries that have garnered audience approval as well as critical appreciation, and will lead to an essay that will ask students to engage with influential documentaries of the past alongside their more recent counterparts. A considerable variety of documentary styles, aesthetics and modes will be explored in the module and students will be encouraged to view and read widely around the required texts.

In this 10-week module we will examine a variety of predominantly post-millennial documentary modes, especially in relation to performance and visual style
