Description

The structures and management issues experienced in construction enterprises are the focus of this module. Management, organisational and project literature is drawn upon to illustrate the issues, supplemented by case study material in the construction and project management discipline.

The module provides an overview of foundational theories and perspectives in enterprise management and demonstrates how that relates to the construction working environment. Students are helped to understand the strategic role of construction enterprises in supporting and developing projects by looking at the management of the firms in themselves rather than looking at the firm through the project lens. Emphasis is placed on the nature of managerial choice and the role choice plays in advancing organisational objectives and hence the competitive advantage of the firm in the marketplace.

The learning material presents a mix of ideas, concepts and frameworks in general management and construction project management disciplines. Learning activities include lectures, group work, tutorials, and substantial independent study.

Lecture titles might include:
1. Organisations, Enterprises and their Management in the Construction Industry
