Description

This module examines relations between people of different religious faiths in Europe in the era between the Protestant Reformation and the French Revolution. It focuses chiefly on relations between Catholics, Calvinists, Lutherans and the other rival Christian confessions that emerged in the wake of the Reformation, but also examines relations between Christians, Jews, and Muslims. Without ignoring the ideas about tolerance and intolerance prevalent at the time, the module asks how, in practice, people of different faiths managed, in some times and places, to coexist peacefully and get along with one another in daily life, while in others they did not. To answer this question it examines phenomena such as interfaith marriage and conversion, arrangements for matters such as worship and burial, and the reasons for outbreaks of religious violence.
