Description

This module is aimed to introduce you to the concepts and ideas underlying the social determinants of health in a global context. A wide range of topics will be covered. These may include, for example:Ìý

  • Social determinants of health in a global contextÌý

  • Conceptual frameworksÌý

  • Measuring population health and the social determinants of healthÌý

  • Life course perspectives, from early childhood through agingÌý

  • Gender, health, and developmentÌý

  • Health equity and sustainable developmentÌý

  • Poverty, income inequality, and healthÌý

  • Disability, inequality, and human rightsÌý

  • Migration and healthÌý

  • Mental health and its determinantsÌý

  • Governance for healthÌý

  • Evidence, power, and the policy process Ìý

By the end of the course, you should be able to:Ìý

  • Locate the discipline of social epidemiology within the broader context of public health and global healthÌý

  • Conceptualise how social determinants affect individual health and the distribution of healthÌý

  • Describe the social gradient in health in populations in high, middle- and low-income countriesÌý

  • Outline the reasons why inequalities in health exist in different countriesÌý

  • Understand the relationships between social and health inequalities and a range of factors including gender, human rights, disability, and developmentÌý

  • Analyse the policy implications of SDGH evidenceÌý

This module is compulsory for students on the MSc Social Epidemiology. Subject to places being available, the module is also available for other postgraduate students from ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº such as students from MSc Population Health and MSc Global Health and Development. Spaces are limited to 60.Ìý

Teaching will take place in the form of short informal lectures and related practical exercises as well as discussions and debates. You will attend up to four half-day sessions per week in the first four weeks of Term 2. Reading materials, lecture notes and other associated work will be made available to you via Moodle.Ìý
