Description

In the context of behaviour change, theories seek to explain why, when and how a behaviour does or does not occur. They represent the accumulated knowledge of the mechanisms of action (mediators) and the influences that modify change (moderators). A scientific model is a descriptive representation of a system consisting of relationships between constructs. It can be used to describe relevant characteristics of a system, make predictions about it and develop interventions to change it. This module will explore the meaning of theory in the context of behaviour change, and familiarise students with the benefits of using theories and models when designing behaviour change interventions, as well as providing examples of specific theories and models that they may wish to use. Students are encouraged to be actively critical of existing theories and models and contribute to discussion around future theoretical advancements.
