  1. Tissue Engineering A (MECH0046)

Description

Tissue engineering is a rapidly developing interdisciplinary subject that draws on different aspects of life sciences, engineering and physical sciences to address the maintenance, repair and replacement of damaged or diseased tissue. Typically, this will involve the use of a biomaterial scaffold to grow cells into 3D tissue constructs that can be transplanted into the patient to improve their health.

The Tissue Engineering module covers topics associated with the clinical implementation of this technology, ranging from cellular and molecular biology, through to examples of tissue engineering currently in clinical use, together with the challenges that currently exist in the development and application of this technology.

The learning objectives for the module are:

  1. To provide students with specialist knowledge of tissue engineering strategies used to repair, replace and regenerate various tissues and organs.
  2. To provide practical interdisciplinary experience of technologies relevant to tissue engineering.
  3. To raise awareness of topical issues associated with tissue engineering.
