Description

Module Outline

This module will comprise of a series of topics drawn from the entire breadth of chemistry, highlighting contemporary research areas within the department, as well as developing on areas already introduced in earlier years. You will select six topics to be assessed in from a selection of ca. 25.

Two or three topics will be available in each of the following areas (many of which will be interdisciplinary in nature):
materials, organic synthesis, natural products, catalysis, physical chemistry, molecular characterisation, intense radiation methods, biological chemistry, data analysis, and quantum mechanics.

Module Aims

At the end of this module students should have:

  1. An understanding of 6 topics on the frontier of contemporary chemistry.
  2. Knowledge of varied chemistry topics, from theory to practical applications, which will directly support and enhance their research projects.
  3. Extensive unseen problem solving skills.
  4. The skills and confidence to ask questions around the frontiers of chemistry research.
  5. Knowledge and skills which make the students prepared for research degrees or professional employment in the chemical sciences.

Teaching and Learning Methods

A topic will be taught through (as appropriate for the topic) lectures, workshops, on-line activities and reading, and problem and practical (non-lab) classes.
