This module will introduce you to the professional activity of translating audiovisual material for voiceover and dubbing. Topics to be covered during the general lectures and seminars include the history and present situation of revoicing modes in audiovisual translation (AVT), the conventions used in the profession, common translation issues and strategies, and economic and professional aspects of voiceover/dubbing. In the language specific seminars, you will develop voiceover and dubbing skills in your language combination, in a variety of registers and styles, by translating texts and programmes of an audiovisual nature drawn from various sources (documentaries, TV series, animation, films) and covering a broad range of specialised genres and issues. You will produce your own translations for voiceover and dubbing purposes taking into consideration relevant conventions.

This is a compulsory module for the MSc Translation and Technology (Audiovisual).

By the end of the module, you should:

1. Understand the linguistic and cultural issues involved in voiceover and dubbing.

2. Be able to identify and exploit the semiotic relationships established between original soundtrack, image and written text when revoicing audiovisual material.

3. Be able to produce a professional version of an audiovisual programme for voiceover/dubbing purposes, both linguistically and technically, having made informed translation choices based on genre, purpose and intended audience.

4. Have acquired the linguistic and technical skills required for producing a translated version of an audiovisual programme for voiceover/dubbing purposes.

5. Know how to adhere to professional conventions of good practice as regards translating for voiceover/dubbing purposes.

6. Have developed specific voiceover/dubbing skills in areas such as synchronisation and production of natural-sounding dialogue.

7. Be familiar with the professional practice and with the resources and links for audiovisual translators available on Internet and elsewhere.

Students must have excellent competence in one of the language pairs listed below and are expected to translate into their native language.

From English into Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Greek, Japanese, Korean, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, Russian, Spanish and Swedish.

From French, German or Spanish into English.
