Description

The module aims to provide an understanding into the following areas of abdominal organ transplantation:

  1. Indications for transplant (kidney, pancreas, liver), including:
    • Diagnosis options
    • Suitability criteria
  2. Surgical techniques in multi-organ retrieval
  3. Surgical techniques in kidney, liver and pancreas transplantation
  4. Pathways of allorecognition and effector response mechanisms, including:
    • Why transplants fail: acute and chronic rejection
  5. Mechanisms to increase transplantation success, including:
    • Peri-operative organ preservation, machine perfusion, bioengineered organ technology
  6. Bio-ethics in transplantation
  7. Immunosuppression and associated complications e.g. malignancy, viral infections etc
