Description

Transport touches all of our lives every day. The transport system is a key enabler of the things we do and a fundamental component of the economy. But it has some very undesirable side-effects on the global and local environment, public health, safety, and quality of life in general. And so policy makers have been trying, in some cases for decades, to modify transport behaviour accordingly.

This module will provide a compelling insight into the state of the art of transport behaviour change, both well-established practices (such as speed limits) and relatively new ones (such as personal travel planning). And it will encourage you as a student to take the practice forward by applying your knowledge of behaviour change theory to the development of an intervention.
Each lecture will include case studies to illustrate topics and provide the basis for discussion and critique.

Topics will include:

  • How behaviour change fits into the governance of transport
  • Typology of audiences and interventions
  • The range of behaviour-change theories applied in transport
  • 鈥淭he four Es鈥: education, engineering, enforcement and economy
  • Evaluation 鈥 theory and practicalities

Learning Outcomes

  1. Ability to analyse data to enable priority setting, monitoring and evaluation of transport policies on the population鈥檚 health and well-being
  2. Ability to assess the strength of evidence of effectiveness of transport interventions, programmes and services intended to improve the health or wellbeing of individuals or populations
  3. Ability to make the policy/business case for transport on interventions using health, social, economic, and environmental evidence, and conversely how health interventions can be delivered through transport and mobility services.
  4. Ability to actively listen, communicate and work in teams
