Summary

When planning care and treatment for children and young people, it's important to have a good understanding of what different psychological interventions are available and how they might work. ÌýThis module considers the different models of psychological therapies used in interventions, including cognitive, behavioural, psychodynamic and family-based approaches. We will examine the key features of each approach, review the evidence-base and find out how they are applied to a range of different mental health presentations. The module includes opportunities to practice some of the clinical skills involved in delivering psychological therapies, including formulation and treatment planning using different models.Ìý

By taking this module, you will be able to:

1. Have an understanding of the mechanisms underpinning different psychological interventionsÌý

2. Consider the theories underlying different models of interventionÌý

3. Consider different therapeutic modalities and practical aspects of delivering different interventionsÌý

4. Consider unique and common features of different interventions including treatment alliance and the qualities of the therapistÌý

5. Consider how to formulate in psychological therapiesÌý

6. Review evidence-base for each with different predicaments and diagnostic groupsÌý

7. Consider how to evaluate change and effectivenessÌý

Who is this module for?

This is a core module for the MSc Child and Adolescent Mental Health.

Teaching and Learning Methods

Sessions will include a mixture of lectures, seminars, research paper discussions and small group work.

Assessment

This module will be assessed by a single 2,000 word essay.
