Description

The module will focus on exposing students to inter-disciplinary theoretical traditions and schools of thought as well as urban design theoretical and methodological traditions and lines of inquiry, which are dominating and shaping research processes and practices within urban design research and practice, and contributing to its establishment as a research discipline. It will offer students the opportunity toÌýcriticallyÌýlearn and discussÌýresearch methodological theories, processes, research tools and practices (in-situ, real-time and virtual),ÌýincludingÌýmethods of representations,Ìýuseful inÌýresearch within the urban designÌýfield.ÌýStudents will critically reflect upon and explore the field of urban design research methodologies, discussing its nature (including ambiguity, pluralism and interdisciplinary scope), and impact on the delivery of unique research agendas and questions.

Building upon this knowledge and critical debates, students will furthermore be offered support on how toÌýdesign their own unique research proposal, and be guided and given feedback through out its writing process. Overall the moduleÌýwill assist research students to locate themselves within specific traditions and lines of inquiry, and justify their choices of fieldwork practices and tools, and discuss their suitability within their own individual research project/dissertation.

The module is a space for critically reflect and explore the field of urban design research methodologies, and discuss its nature, scope and impact on the delivery of unique research agendas and questions.
