Description

This module explores some of the fundamental elements and principles in Wireless Communication system design. It introduces important concepts in baseband and passband digital transmission, fundamentals of modulated signal detection, and channel coding. It then moves onto advanced transmission technologies for Multiple-Input-Multiple-Output (MIMO) systems, Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM), Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA). At the end of the course you will obtain an in-depth understanding of the above technologies that lay the foundations for modern 5G communication systems and beyond.

On completion of this module, students will be able to:

Demonstrate their knowledge of advanced digital communications techniques, such as multi-level and multicarrier modulation and demodulation, and their application in wireless communication systems.

Apply the knowledge of advanced digital communications techniques to solve analytical problems, which may require choosing among different approaches and formulations.

Evaluate the strengths and limitations of different digital communications models and analytical techniques, determining the constraints imposed by wireless communications.

Apply domain knowledge of digital communications models to make engineering judgements in problem analysis and element design, and to critically evaluate the results.

Demonstrate their knowledge of advanced channel coding techniques, including those for multiple-input multiple-output systems, and their application in wireless communication systems.

Apply their knowledge of advanced channel coding techniques to decide which channel coding techniques to use, and design appropriate error correction systems for various scenarios.

Describe the limitations of the different channel coding methods and the constraints imposed by the complexity of practical implementations.

Employ analytical tools to infer and predict channel coding performance and to choose the appropriate channel coding approach.
