Major conference on American cinema

The 2003 Commonwealth Fund Conference on American History, held at ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº in June, was devoted to 'American Cinema and Everyday Life'.

Dr Melvyn Stokes Co-organised by Dr Melvyn Stokes (History), it included more than 50 papers addressing a broad range of issues related to the history of the social experience of moviegoing.

The conference concentrated on the comparatively understudied areas of moviegoing in rural settlements, smaller cities and towns, itinerant exhibition, and non-theatrical and non-commercial exhibition. The historical span of the conference ranged from the post-nickelodeon era up to the latter half of the 20th century.

Contributions from ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº academics included 'Looking for the Message: Home of the Brave, Lost Boundaries and the Atlanta Daily World' by Miss Arlene Hui (History) and Dr Stokes' 'Race, Reception and Popular Culture in America, c1902-1915'.
