Annual lectures in memory of Professor Roy Porter established

The first annual memorial lecture in remembrance of world renowned 果冻影院 historian Professor Roy Porter (Wellcome Trust Centre for the History of Medicine) takes place on 26 March 2003.
Already oversubscribed, the popularity of the event pays testament to Professor
Porter, who was tremendously well liked and respected by the 果冻影院 community and
in international academic circles. The lecture, Love and Madness in the
18th Century, will be given by Professor John Brewer (California, USA),
a close friend and colleague of Professor Porter.
The subject of the lecture was one close to Professor Porter's heart,
as he had written a number of books on the history of madness, including Madness:
A Short History and Mind Forg'd Manacles: Madness and Psychiatry
in England from Restoration to Regency.
A prolific author and historian, he produced more than 200 books on a plethora
of subjects before his death in 2002, including histories of geology, madness
and psychiatry, and a social history of London. His major publication, The
Enlightenment, received international acclaim.
Professor Harold Cook, Director of the Wellcome Trust Centre for the History
of Medicine, stated: "Roy commanded several fields. The posthumous publication
of his 'Madness: A Brief History', has been reviewed widely and
appreciatively. All who knew him will remember his huge love of life and enormous
energy. Plentiful jewellery and stubble of a beard, and frank but generous criticism."
