'Cultural Carnival' celebrates ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº's diverse community

6 March 2003

The ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº community came together in February 2003 to celebrate its cultural diversity.

A ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº student models a traditional Japanese costume Morris dancing workshops and Carribean food tastings were some of the colourful activities that illustrated ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº's multiplicity.

There are almost 6,000 international students from more than 145 countries studying at ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº, contributing to a diverse cultural mix. ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº Union's annual 'Cultural Carnival' celebrated that diversity with a week of events including a food fayre, craft fayre, fashion show and talent showcase.

Underlying the celebration as always was a serious anti-racism message, supported by a world religion poster exhibition in the Cloisters.

The 'Cultural Carnival', now in its seventh year, is the largest and best supported of ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº Union's awareness weeks. Students are encouraged to experience first hand some of the traditions that contribute to the ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº community; ranging from origami workshops to displays of antique Japanese kimonos and live gospel singing.

Ms Angi Bholé, ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº Union's Services & Events Officer, explained: "The aim of the week is to bring a carnival atmosphere to ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº, while fostering a sense of pride and mutual respect in our mixed multicultural community."
