Research Computing show and tell

21 July 2005

Over the last four years, ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº has committed a significant proportion of its Science Research Investment Fund (SRIF) allocation to the enhancement of its IT infrastructure for e-Science and the provision of high-performance computational facilities.

Clare Gryce An active community from across ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº has grown around the use and management of these facilities and the research that they enable.

On the morning of Friday 15 July 2005, the Research Computing Sub-Committee will hostÌýits annual 'Show and Tell' event. TheÌýprogramme of this half-day session will include presentations from current users of advanced, centrally-managed computing facilities, explaining how their research has benefited and others explaining how the systems are managed and accessed.

There will also be a question and answer session and an open discussion on plans for expansion under SRIF3. The event will be opened by the Provost at 9:30am in the Gustav TuckÌýLectureÌýTheatreÌýand close with a buffet lunch and poster session in the South Cloisters.

£4.351 million from SRIF3 has recently been allocated to the development of ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº's Research Computing infrastructure. This event is an opportunity for researchers from across ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº to come together to discuss how this sizeable award should be invested.

Ms Clare Gryce, manager of the ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº e-Science Centre of Excellence, said: "It is vitally important that in planning the purchase of new equipment, we understand the needs of researchers from across the spectrum of ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº departments. To decide how funds are best spent, we must consult with both current and future users from all areas. This event will hopefully engage the ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº research community in the planning process and assist in the identification of areas and projects for investment."
