Rickshaw across America

21 February 2006

¹û¶³Ó°Ôº graduate Ed Hughes (BA Contemporary Eastern European Studies 2004, MA Politics Security and Integration 2005) began a record-breaking journey at the helm of a rickshaw on 16 February 2006 on a pan-American fundraising cycle trip.

Ed's epic journey started in San Francisco, from where he is pedalling his rickshaw 3,000 miles over the Rocky Mountains and through the Colorado Desert on his way to New York City.

What might take little more than a month's worth of leisurely cruising for a keen cyclist will be made infinitely harder and take two or three times longer by the addition of passengers and a third wheel, but this isn't enough to discourage the 23-year-old, who will be carrying a tent, but is hoping to stay overnight on campuses and in kindly households.

"I'd seen all these people cycling across the States and I thought that trying it in a rickshaw would be a great opportunity to help a cause that's important to me," says Ed, who is raising money on behalf of the Cystic Fibrosis Trust, a charity which is working on a cure for the inherited disease which has affected members of his family. "Along the way, I will pick up anyone and try to have a quick chat with them about why I'm doing it and leave them cards with my donation page details if they're interested. I'm also picking up minor celebrities from 'Diagnosis Murder' for bets."
