17 July 2006

Tropical Storm Risk (TSR), the consortium of experts on insurance, risk management and seasonal climate forecasting, led by ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº's Benfield Hazard Research Centre, has won a prize in the prestigious British Insurance Awards 2006.

TSR won the coveted 'Risk Management' award for their advances in hurricane modelling and forecasting and for their online Tropical Storm Tracker system. These innovations have provided a significant advance in identifying and managing the risk from US hurricanes for insurers and reinsurers.

Professor Mark Saunders (Space & Climate Physics), who leads the project said: "This is the second time in three years that TSR has won a major industry award. In 2004 TSR won the British Insurance Award for London Market Innovation of the Year. This success is testament to the sustained hard work and creativity of the whole team. It also demonstrates what can be achieved by a small university-led venture compared to the resources of large national and multinational companies."

The TSR Tropical Storm Tracker is a free internet application available from . The product enables insurers, reinsurers, risk managers, humanitarian relief agencies and others to assess when, where and to what extent losses are likely to happen from active tropical storms worldwide.
