Supernovae are source of life in the universe

9 June 2006

The cataclysmic energy released by massive stars as they die is the source of space dust, the building blocks of life in the universe, according to research involving the SEEDS collaboration (Survey for the Evolution of Emission from Dust in Supernovae) led by Professor Mike Barlow (¹û¶³Ó°Ôº Physics & Astronomy).

The finding, which confirms scientists' suspicions, was made possible through use of NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope which allowed the research team to observe the behaviour of a supernova approximately 30 million light years away from Earth.
