3 July 2007
Genetically modified skin cells could be used to fight a deadly childhood cancer, a study suggests.
Tests on mice found that they could be deployed to fight neuroblastoma - a cancer of specialised nerve cells, known as "neural crest cells" often in the abdomen or adrenal glands. …
A team lead by Dr Stephen Hart at the ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº Institute of Child Health found that injecting GM cells into the tumours appeared to both increase life expectancy and improve the body's ability to fight the cancer in the future. …
"The genetically modified cells are little factories, producing proteins - proinflammatory cytokines - which promote immune activity," Dr Hart said.
