12 June 2007

The deadline for applications for funding from ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº Research Challenges has passed.

jo wolff Sixty-five applications have been received, requesting funds totalling more than £1.6 million.

The Research Challenges Board is now considering which projects to support. Project proposals are based on five themes: Sustainability; London; Infection; Communication and Access to Culture; and New Medical Technologies. The themes were devised to reflect ideas generated from across the university, after a campaign to gauge opinion on what areas students, staff and alumni were most interested to see researched at ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº.

Professor Jonathan Wolff, who coordinates the Research Challenges scheme, said: "The interest and quality of the bids is remarkably high, and speaks volumes about the talent, energy and enthusiasm of ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº staff. It is notable that so many of the bids are inter-disciplinary. One applicant remarked that if the point of the scheme was to encourage discussion between the faculties then it has already been a great success."
